Scouts go to Scarefest!

Scout Jamie tells us about their trip to Scarefest – Scoutings very own Halloween festival at Gilwell park!

On a Thursday night, 11 scouts descended on New Cross Gate Sainsburys, the aim was to get enough food to sustain us for a weekend in 20 minutes! After that it was a quick drive to the scout hall where we played tetris packing the mini bus so we were ready to rock and roll on Friday night.

Scarefest day arrives

We all climbed into the minibus, snacks were eaten and Jo and Liz were singing along to disney songs, much to the annoyance of the scouts. Then the drive began, after about an hour we arrived at Gilwell park. As we got out and started to put up our tents, the heavens decided to descendĀ upon us in the form of a thunderstorm. After a couple of hours battling the elements and tents, we were finally ready and set up. Dripping wet scouts were sent in to change and then snuggle down in our sleeping bags.

Saturday MorningĀ

This day started off with collecting our food, and making breakfast. Our patrol breakfast was fried egg sandwiches or cheese and crackers (which was last night’s snack). We then tidied up and were sent off to clean our teeth (although we don’t know how many actually did this!)

The Scarefest Activities

We were allowed to roam in small groups and there was so much to do, from carnival rides, to go-karting, tommahawks to a scary maze, to the rainbow cafe for a hot drink and cake we were never short of something to do. Now we are at the next refueling stop. For lunch we made chicken fried rice on a trangia which was delicious but a little too much soy sauce. After that we continued with activities until it was time to cook chicken burritos for dinner.

My favourite thing about Scarefest was cooking on the Trangia and trying to balance our budget.
