Barbara Collins

(1936 – 2009)

As a nineteen year old, Barbara Meadows joined the 1st New Cross in 1956 as an Assistant Cub Mistress.

Four years later she became Akela, the Cub Mistress, an appointment she held for 21 years. By then Barbara had married Alan Collins and they had two daughters. Barbara remained a loyal and very active member of 1st New Cross for the rest of her life, only retiring as Group Treasurer a few weeks before passing away on 6th May 2009.

But Barbara‟s influence and abilities were felt much wider than just in the 1st New Cross. She gave her time and expertise to many other areas of Scouting: .the B_P Guild (now the Scout Active Support), as Assistant District Commissioner (Beavers) for Deptford, as wardrobe mistress for the South East London County Gang Show for about two decades preceded by the same role for Scout Shows for Deptford District and the Turnpike Venture Scout Unit and bookings secretary for the District camping ground – just to mention a few.

Both Alan and Barbara had a love of the Westerham camping ground and spent many short and long District and Group camps there plus hundreds of maintenance and development hours.

Barbara made friends easily and was always there to help and advise others. She was a very friendly person, always ready to share a laugh. Who can forget her occasional attacks of the giggles? Above all, Barbara was a family person, her two daughters, their husbands and her four grandchildren were her hub and to them we, who will miss her friendship, extend our condolences.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
